Narrative
Christian Science:
Mary Baker Eddy –
“True estimate of God’s Messenger”
The Narrative is a spiritual history of the discovery and founding of Christian Science, showing how its divinely impelled unfolding is in the order of the seven days of creation at the beginning of the Bible.
PART I: 1821 – 1890, covers four periods beginning with what Mrs. Eddy describes as ‘gracious preparation’ for the discovery; publication of the first edition of the textbook; formation of the Christian Scientist Association, the Church of Christ, Scientist, the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, and the National Christian Scientist Association; finally the dissolution of every one of these institutions into “voluntary associations”; Mrs. Eddy moves to Concord, New Hampshire.
PART II: 1891 – 1901, the fifth period opens with the publication of the 50th edition of Science and Health in these years of voluntary association; signing of a “Deed of Trust Conveying Land for Church Edifice”; twenty-one days later, at the request of Mrs. Eddy, “twelve of her students and Church members met and reorganized, under her jurisdiction” (Church Manual 128 & 18). Original edifice built and dedicated.
PART III: 1902 – 1906, the sixth period begins with the 226th edition of the textbook – the chapters are now in their final order. The Concord branch Church and the Mother Church Extension are built and dedicated.
PART IV: 1907 – 1910, the seventh period: in 1907 the final wording appeared of the answer to the question, what is God? – this question had been the first one in Mrs. Eddy’s first class in 1870; the “Next Friends suit” is filed; Mrs. Eddy moves to Boston; The Christian Science Monitor is launched in 1908.
